PEDESTRIAN DETECTION - Traffic signals intervention
Pedestrians requesting a walk signal do not always wait for the lights to change - often electing to make use of a gap in the traffic to get to the other side. In these cases the walk request will still be processed, resulting in an unnecessary and frustrating halt to the flow of vehicle traffic. It would be desirable to cancel the walk request if the pedestrian is no longer waiting to cross the road.
On a broad (multi-lane) pedestrian crossing the time it takes for a pedestrian to reach the safety of the other side of the road can vary significantly according to mobility. Walk signal durations switched dynamically in accordance with individual or group crossing times results in improved road safety and reduced driver frustration.
The Vidimon® video detection solution is a non-invasive system that detects the presence or absence of a pedestrian waiting to cross the road or in the act of moving across the road and it will interact with the traffic signals controller to cancel walk requests that are no longer required and hold the all-red signals until the roadway is clear of pedestrians.
